The Illusion of Options — Faith Has a Higher Calling
When I think back over my life, I remember something an older pastor once told me when I was much younger: “Son, some lessons won’t come from books or sermons — life will teach you itself.” And as the years have passed, I’ve learned how true that really is.
As we enter the Christmas season, I’m always reminded of the humility surrounding Jesus’ birth. Born in a manger, wrapped in whatever cloth was available, placed in a borrowed space. And yet God used that moment to teach us something profound:
** **YOU ARE NOT DEFINED BY WHERE YOU START.
AND YOU WILL OUTGROW THE PLACE YOU BEGAN.**
Many years ago, a friend of mine shared something that shook me to my core. He had been traveling through Georgia when his old truck suddenly gave out. Funds were low, bills were piling up, and he had been trying to build a small business from scratch. That day, everything felt like it was collapsing at once.
As he waited for help on the side of that dusty road, he said to me, “ROHO, this is rough… but where I am is not who I am.”
I could hear in his voice that he wasn’t preaching to me — he was preaching to himself. But those words settled deep in my spirit, and I’ve carried them ever since.
Through my own valleys, disappointments, unexpected setbacks, and silent battles, I’ve had to repeat that same truth again and again:
Life will take you through seasons you didn’t ask for. Storms will come whether you prayed or not. The Bible reminds us that “the rain falls on the just and the unjust.” None of us are exempt.
But hear me clearly— If you are facing something heavy right now, if you’re tired, if you’re discouraged, if you feel like life has backed you into a corner:
** **GOD HAS DESTINED YOU FOR GREATER,
BECAUSE WHERE YOU ARE IS NOT WHO YOU ARE.**
This moment is not your identity. This struggle is not your definition. This chapter is not the whole story.
Hold your head up. Your future is bigger than this present season.
Scripture for Meditation
Romans 8:28 (KJV): "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."
Beloved, your circumstances are not random — they are being woven into a divine tapestry. God is not surprised by your truck breaking down, your bills piling up, or the season you find yourself in. He is working all of it together for your ultimate good and for His eternal purpose in your life.
Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV): "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."
Family, the enemy wants you to believe that where you are right now defines your destiny. But God has already thought about your future, and His thoughts toward you are thoughts of peace. Your present location is never your final destination.
Philippians 3:13-14 (KJV): "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."
The apostle Paul teaches us that our calling demands we move forward. Do not camp in yesterday's disappointment or this season's struggle. Press toward what God has ordained for you.
Walking It Out
First, declare over yourself today: "Where I am is not who I am." Say it aloud. Write it down. Speak it every time doubt whispers that your current circumstance is your permanent condition. Your address, your bank account, and your setback are all temporary — your purpose is eternal.
Second, identify one area where you've confused your location with your identity. Is it your job title? Your relationship status? Your financial standing? Name it. Then ask yourself: What is God trying to teach me through this season that will strengthen me for my true calling? Write down one answer and sit with it.
Third, take one small action today toward your God-given purpose, no matter how small. Make that phone call. Send that email. Read that chapter. Pray for that vision. Do not wait until every circumstance is perfect. Your manger had no heat, yet the Savior came forth. Movement matters more than perfection.
A Prayer for You
Father, I thank You that my present circumstance does not define my eternal purpose. Help me, today, to separate where I am from who I am in You. Give me the courage to keep moving forward even when the road is dusty and uncertain, and the grace to see Your hand working all things together for my good. Strengthen my faith to believe that the same God who brought Jesus through a manger will bring me through this season into the fullness of my calling. In Jesus' name, Amen.
