Covering Our Children in Prayer
This morning we were reminded that our children’s futures depend on the vision we help them see today. “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)
We cover our children in prayer, but we also know that prayer works best when joined with action. Each devotional, every word of encouragement, and the resources we share through ROHO are designed to nurture the hearts and spirits of families who need it most.
As you pray today, we invite you to also consider how you might come alongside this work—through your time, your prayers, and, if you feel led, your support.
When we invest in our children—whether through prayer, mentorship, or quiet acts of generosity—we are shaping a future that reflects God’s love.
Lord, we lift up every child You have placed in our care. Keep their eyes clear to see Your truth and their hearts strong to follow Your way. Bless every parent and guardian with wisdom, patience, and love. May our community remain faithful in sowing into the next generation. Amen.
Scripture for Meditation
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (NKJV) — "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up." The covering of prayer is not separate from the covering of presence, beloved. God calls us to be intentional witnesses of His truth in the everyday moments—at the breakfast table, on the drive to school, in the bedtime hour. Your words matter because your children are watching how you live out your faith.
1 Timothy 4:4-5 (KJV) — "For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer." When you pray over your children's lives—over their friendships, their studies, their struggles—you are sanctifying their journey. Prayer transforms the ordinary into the sacred. Your intercession declares to heaven that these young lives belong to God's kingdom and His purposes.
Proverbs 31:8-9 (NKJV) — "Open your mouth for the speechless, in the cause of all who are appointed to die. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy." As you cover your own children in prayer, remember that God also calls us to advocate for the voiceless—other people's children who need prayer warriors. Your covering extends beyond your household when your heart is aligned with God's heart for justice and mercy.
Walking It Out
First, establish a specific prayer time for your children today. Not a rushed moment, but a dedicated season—whether five minutes or twenty. Write their names down. Speak them aloud before God. Name specific needs, dreams, and spiritual protections you desire for each child. Let them know you are praying; invite them to pray with you.
Second, take one intentional action beyond prayer. Send a text of encouragement to your child, have a meaningful conversation about their faith or their struggles, or spend unrushed time listening to what matters to them. Action joined with prayer creates a partnership that children feel and remember.
Third, consider how you might extend your covering to another family. Reach out to a mentor a young person who needs a steady voice of faith. Commit to praying for them weekly. Your investment in someone else's child multiplies the blessing God is already working through your own family.
A Prayer for You
Father God, I come before You with the names and faces of the children You have entrusted to my care burning in my heart. I thank You for their lives, their potential, and the sacred responsibility You have given me to help shape their destiny. Strengthen me to pray with consistency and conviction, not out of fear but out of faith in Your goodness and power. Help me to be a living example of the faith I am asking them to embrace. And Lord, expand my heart to see beyond my own household—use me as an instrument of prayer and blessing for the next generation wherever You have placed me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
