A Holy Purge: Clear Out the Clutter 🧹✨

Share

Today’s assignment is simple, but it’s not easy: purge the clutter.

Many of us, like our parents and grandparents, hold on to things—old blankets, family china, boxes of VHS tapes, piles of clothes. We hold on because of memories, because of what it cost us, or because we fear not having enough later. But over time, what we hold on to begins to hold us back.

Clutter is more than physical. It clouds the mind, weighs down the spirit, and keeps us from moving freely into the future God has for us. And if we’re honest, this is not just about stuff—it’s about our story as a people.

Black families have often held on to everything, because for so long, we were denied access to more. We hoard not just things, but trauma, survival strategies, and even pain. We keep items that represent sacrifice, because our ancestors built lives out of scraps. But the same resourcefulness that kept us alive can also keep us trapped.

Jesus said, “A man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth” (Luke 12:15, KJV). Paul reminded us to “lay aside every weight” (Hebrews 12:1). Some of us can’t run the race God has set before us because we’re still carrying the junk—physically, emotionally, spiritually—that was never meant for this season.

So today, I challenge you: pick one drawer, one closet, one corner. Purge it. Throw away what doesn’t serve you. Donate what can bless someone else. And as you do, ask God: “What am I holding onto in my spirit that You want me to release?”

Because when you clear the clutter, you’re not just making space in your home—you’re making space in your heart for God’s peace, God’s purpose, and God’s power.

🧹 Weekend Assignment: Clear one space in your home today. As you purge the clutter, release the spiritual baggage that no longer serves you. Make room for God.

Scripture for Meditation

Luke 12:15 (KJV): "And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth."

Jesus is cutting straight to the heart, beloved. We live in a culture that equates abundance with ownership, but the Master reminds us that life—real, abundant, purposeful life—has nothing to do with what fills your closets. When you hold too tightly to things, you're actually holding too loosely to the freedom God offers.

Hebrews 12:1-2 (KJV): "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith."

Paul uses the language of a runner preparing for a race. Every weight—whether it's a box of old letters, a piece of furniture steeped in painful memory, or a survival strategy that no longer serves you—must be laid aside. God has a race marked out for you, family, and He's calling you to run it unencumbered.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV): "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

When you gave your life to Christ, the old passed away. That means the old survival strategies, the old fears of scarcity, the old need to prove your worth through what you own—they don't belong in your new life. It's time to let them go and step into the newness Christ purchased for you.

Walking It Out

1. Start with one small space today. Don't overwhelm yourself. Choose one drawer, one shelf, or one corner. Set a timer for 30 minutes. As you touch each item, ask yourself: "Does this serve my future, or does it belong to my past?" If the answer is the past, it's time to release it.

2. Separate items into three piles: Keep, Donate, and Discard. The donate pile is crucial—it shifts your mindset from loss to blessing. Call a local shelter, church, or family member who could use these items. When you give away what clutters your space, you're planting seeds of generosity and creating room for fresh blessings.

3. Journal one spiritual weight you're ready to release. After you've cleared the physical space, sit quietly and write down one emotional, relational, or spiritual burden you've been carrying. Maybe it's an old hurt, a grudge, a false belief about your worth. Write it down, and then pray over that page, asking God to help you truly let it go.

A Prayer for You

Father, I come before You asking for courage to release what no longer serves me. Forgive me for holding so tightly to things—both seen and unseen—out of fear and old habits.
